Abstract

This past fall, the University of Michigan Library's Computer & Video Game Archive celebrated its fifth anniversary. Open to the public, it serves the dual mission of preserving the electronic gaming experience and serving as a research and teaching resource for faculty, students and staff at the University.

This presentation will be an overview of what we've learned over the past five years, focusing on two areas:

1) Challenges of acquiring and preserving games in an active use environment.

2) Ways in which the archive has been used by researchers, students and instructors at the University.
